13th #AllAmerican Portrait: Anjali

First name: Anjali

What makes America great?

America is great because we have the right to express ourselves, particularly the right to express dissenting views. I appreciate and utilize this right every single day.

What does it mean to be American?

For me, being an American, especially since November 2016, has come to mean actively engaging in the political process. Since the age of 18, I’ve voted in every election and have been actively engaged in social justice causes. But I will never again let another election go by without throwing my full weight behind Democratic or progressive campaigns.

Occupation: I’m on the board of the National Book Critics Circle, a freelance writer, and a creative nonfiction instructor in the Etowah Valley MFA program at Reinhardt University. My essays, articles and reviews have appeared in The Atlantic, The Week, the Atlanta Journal Constitution, NPR, Pacific Standard, NBC, and elsewhere.

Do you identify any particular interests such as hiking, reading, biking, etc.? love to hike to waterfalls. I’ve been to about a dozen or so in North Georgia and these hikes center me. Nature for me is oxygen.
